Abstract

The purpose of this article is to analyze the image of the tango and the fado presented by Tango! and A Severa, the first sound films of Argentina and Portugal respectively, and to consider the similarities between these two processes. These movies channel the collective amazement caused by the spontaneous birth of both musical genres, which soon became national symbols in their corresponding countries, and encourage certain myths related to their histories and their metaphorical universes. We postulate that both productions coincide in mythologizing the tango and the fado, based on four axes: the active feminine, the transgression, the journey and the verticality.
