Abstract

The child population with Autism Espectrum Disorder (ASD) presents difficulties in the occupational performance of independence skills in the area of hygiene, such as tooth brushing. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the backward chaining strategy in learning the skill of tooth brushing in children with ASD. A quantitative study was conducted, with a non-probabilistic convenience sample of 6 children with ASD attending a clinical setting in the city of Santiago, Chile. The backward chaining program was applied, which consists of performing a task analysis that results in a chain of behaviors that the participants must perform with gradual support from the therapist. The results determine that all participants increase the independent steps of the target behavior and maintain the level of independence in the reevaluation, indicating that the strategy's teaching generates an increase in the percentage of independence in the skill of tooth brushing. Suggestions for future research are made.
