Memory and technology in the philosophy of Bernard Stiegler

Authors

Abstract

The article explores the relationship between memory and technology in Bernard Stiegler's work, focusing its analysis on "tertiary retention," a form of memory externalized in technical artifacts. Technology, beyond merely storing information, reconfigures mnemotechnic processes and human identity, challenging traditional distinctions between organic and artificial memory. The digital era transforms how we remember and construct personal and collective narratives, presenting both opportunities for cognitive enrichment and risks of eroding internal memory and cultural identity. Stiegler's philosophical approach invites critical reflection on the ethical and existential implications of technology in contemporary society.
