At present, the Dominican Republic is the first destination for many Haitian migrants. Moreover, Haiti and Haitians have occupied a special place in the Dominican collective imagination for more than a century. Based on an ethnographic fieldwork, this article questions the daily relationships between Haitians and Dominicans in the Dominican borderland formerly known for its mixed society. Ethnography thus reveals the role of physical appearances and identity affiliations during interactions. It also reveals the importance of identity assignments, particularly in terms of circulation in a society strongly marked by racial discrimination and a national ideology centered on anti-Haitianism
